Tools for Rose Gardening

If youre considering planting a rose garden for the first time, or have moved into a home with a rose garden already planted, you may be wondering what types of tools are necessary to care for a rose garden.

You might be surprised to learn that the tools for rose gardening may already be in shed.

First youll want a good shovel. There are many different brands available in a wide price range.

Remember that youll want to choose a shovel thats not too heavy for you, or youll be less likely to pick it up and use it. There are brands available with lightweight, fiberglass shafts that are just as sturdy as the wooden or metal-shaftled shovels. The big difference is the weight.

Next youll need a pair of pruners. I recommend hand pruners, since youll want to be able to really get into your roses to prune without cutting or damaging nearby stems or blooms.

Be sure when selecting your pruners to get the type with a scissor cut, as they make the cleanest cut and cause less damage to your plant.

Gloves are another item youll want. Not only do you want to choose gloves that fit well, but youll want to select a sturdy brand. You may want to consider purchasing a pair designed to prevent tools from slipping out of your hands.

Not only will this prevent frustration while gardening, but it also may prevent injuries caused by tools slipping from your hands. A garden rake is a must for loosening soil around your roses.

There are long-handled and short-handled garden rakes. Either will work for your garden. I recommend you choose one with steel tines, as they are sturdier.

You may want short-handled model for ease of use in tight places, or you may want the long-handled model so it can be used for other gardening tasks. The choice is really a matter of preference.

Weve covered the absolute essential tools for rose gardening. However, there are a couple highly recommended, optional tools you may want to consider purchasing such as kneeling pads, a watering wand, a wheel barrow and loppers.

The kneeling pads make the time you spend on your knees less uncomfortable. The watering wand is great for giving your roses a good root soaking and for use in potted roses.

The wheel barrow will save you a backache when transporting heavy bags of mulch, fertilizer or other items for your garden.
