The Dead Sea Scroll Caves![]() Navigation: Main page Author: John Between 1947 and 1956, in an area that is 13 miles east of Jerusalem and 1,300 feet BELOW sea level in 11 caves, the most astounding discovery of modern times was made when what has come to be known as The Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Most of the scrolls re made of animal skins, but papyrus was also used and there is one scroll made of copper. The scrolls are written with a carbon-based ink. They are written from right to left and use almost no punctuation. There aren't even spaces between the words in many cases. Some of the scrolls were sealed in pottery jars that appear to have been made specifically to hold the scrolls. It depends on who is telling the story, of course, but the scrolls were discovered by Bedouin goat-herders who were: A) searching for a lost goat; or B) searching for treasure in 1947. The scrolls, as you might imagine, were not in pristine condition. As a matter of fact, only caves 1 and 11 yielded scrolls that were basically intact. Most of the scrolls are in rather poor condition, and most aren identified. All of the Dead Sea Scrolls are the oldest versions of books of the Old Testament that have ever been found. Of special interest has been the Isaiah Scroll. It was found relatively intact and is 1,000 years older than any previously known copy of Isaiah. Disclaimer Privacy-Policy Terms-Of-Use |
