Scott Hallow Cave![]() Navigation: Main page Author: Tom Man has learned many things about this planet we call earth. Mostly we've learned that we don't know much and there are still undiscovered wonders out there. A lot of those wonders are underground in wonderful and as yet undiscovered caves.Scott Hallow Cave is one of those wonders that is still in the process of being discovered. The cave has been there for millions of years. Humans just didn't know it. Because of technology, we knew that there was some kind of cave down there. "Down there" being in the southern end of the Greenbrier Valley, in Greenbrier and Monroe counties of West Virginia. Cavers searched for years trying to find the cave that they knew was down there somewhere. Finally, in 1984 they dug into the cave. They discovered an absolutely virgin cave system. So far there is no evidence that man has ever been into the Scott Hallow Cave. Very few caves, if any, have ever been uncovered that show no signs at all of human habitation. That means that man hasn't had a hand in disturbing the natural ecological system of the cave. Because it has never been disturbed by man, the Scott Hallow Cave is of special interest to speleologists. The National Speleological Society sponsors the Scott Hallow Cave Project. The Speleological Society coordinates exploration and mapping as well as scientific study in the Scott Hallow Cave. It's been 24 years since the Scott Hallow Cave was broken into by cavers. In those 24 years, only about 30 miles of the virgin cave passages have been mapped. There's a long way to go. There's a lot more exploration needed. Cavers have no doubt that there are many passages that have yet to be discovered and mapped in the Scott Hallow Cave. Disclaimer Privacy-Policy Terms-Of-Use |
