Kidney Disease and Diabetes![]() Navigation: Main page Author: Adem When the kidneys are working as designed, they do a marvelous job of keeping our bodies functioning well. The glomeruli (tiny filters that are in the kidneys) keep proteins inside of your body.Protein is necessary to many bodily functions and are vital to keeping us healthy. Diabetes causes a high concentration of glucose in the blood. The glucose causes damage to the glomeruli. When the glomeruli are damaged, they can't keep the protein in the body. The protein is leaked into the urine from the kidneys. When the kidneys quit doing their job (filtering waste out of the system), fluid and waste builds up in the body. More demand is put on the kidneys. The kidneys can't keep up with the demand and so they shut down. Kidney disease is the result. The main problem here is that when the first symptoms arrive, it's usually too late to do anything to reverse the damage. Kidney disease is sneaky! Years can pass between the time the kidneys begin to have a problem and the time that the owner of the kidneys realizes he has a problem. But urine tests can detect problems long before there are any symptoms. It is of the utmost importance that diabetes be diagnosed early. Your doctor should check your blood sugar readings with every annual physical. If you are predisposed to diabetes, you should be checked more often. Here's what you can do to prevent kidney disease if you are diabetic: * Perform blood glucose tests as ordered by your doctor. If he said six times a day, check six times a day. * Control your diabetes by eating well and getting regular exercise. * Take your medication as your doctor has directed. * Have your physician test your urine regularly for kidney problems.
