Challenges for the Diabetic![]() Navigation: Main page Author: Adem There was a time when a diagnosis of diabetes was a death sentence. Diabetes could not even be controlled before insulin was discovered in 1921 and it took another 20 or 30 years for insulin to become readily available for the treatment of diabetes.Today, however, a diagnosis of diabetes, although treatable, still presents a whole host of challenges. It's hard to be spontaneous when you are chained to the strict schedule required to control the disease. Simple things like going out with friends for an evening can become a major problem. The simple idea of grabbing a burger on the fly is impossible. Every age of life has its own challenges and issues that are stressful. If you have a child with diabetes, that's stressful. If you have a teenager with diabetes, that's stressful for YOU and for the teenager. Young adults must deal with diabetes and with college life, dating, and marriage. There are stresses caused by family and by jobs. Life, it seems is full of stressful situations; and for diabetics, they are doubly stressful because they must deal with the stressful situation AND with their diabetes at the same time. Diabetes doesn't ever take a holiday or a vacation. IT is ALWAYS there and it ALWAYS must be considered no matter what the outside stresses might be. Diabetics MUST test their blood glucose level at regular intervals. Diabetics MUST count the calories and/or carbs that they consume. Diabetics MUST live on a regular and predictable schedule in order to maintain control of their disease. And the problem of maintaining a strict schedule is stressful all by itself. The point is to control your diabetes and not let your diabetes control you. Yes, you do have to test, count calories, and give yourself insulin when needed, and you must maintain a reasonably regular schedule. But even within that schedule and with the built-in constraints, life can be good. Life can be long, active, prosperous, and healthy. Disclaimer Privacy-Policy Terms-Of-Use |
